Moral Compass: let it guide you to the light

First off, what the heck is a moral compass? According to dictionary.com, the definition of moral compass is, “anything which serves to guide a person’s decisions based on morals or virtues.”
Since I was 3 (I am not making this up), I have been interested in morals, values, and ethics. On my third birthday I insisted my mom throw me a Character Counts birthday party. Character Counts had six pillars of character and my favorite pillar was fairness. I have always liked to follow the rules and fight for what I think is right. Yes, I know what you’re thinking, there is more to this than just my stubbornness and bossiness (LOL).
So, my spring break technically started on Thursday but Saturday, Sunday, and Monday I decided to take a spring break intensive class focusing on ethical decisions in leadership. During this course, I came to several revelations. The most important revelation I came to was when one of my classmates said I have a “high moral compass.” It got me thinking. Do I really? It smacked me in the face. This is so innate to me, I just operate in this fashion of ethical authenticity and I didn’t know what to say but the two simple words of thank you.
I talked to my mom on my lunch break and was naturally talking faster than she could probably understand. I usually speak with a lot of analogies and during this conversation, I was spitting them out left and right. One analogy stuck with me and here’s what I discovered:
1) Having a strong moral compass is like wearing a particular pair of glasses with “super powers.” These glasses let you make “wise beyond your years” decisions, give you the role of being the “mom” when going out with friends, and the never-ending comment of, “I wish I knew that when I was your age.”
2) These glasses are a gift, but if and only if they can be used in a way that can benefit you and your surroundings. It is important to remember that the gift of being able to wear these glasses promises a level of conscientiousness and aspect of self-control. It must be noted that a level of self-awareness can assist you to be present in combination of the other factors as mentioned above.
3) You have to remember that just because you have these glasses, or super powers, or whatever you call it, that others may or may not. Some may never have the desire to strengthen their morals or values until they grow older, some may not have a desire to make ethical decisions, or some may not want to figure out what their real values are.
4) I FINALLY understand that while I have the ability to wear these glasses, I can also choose to take them off. I can wear my superhero shades, but at the end of the day I can also take them off and be human because that is a super power, too. I can make mistakes, even when I have a high regard for right and wrong. My values and morals do not need to be stagnant, and I can be human and adapt to life. I can embrace the waves of life and welcome change with open arms. I can do that, and I can own that.
A strong moral compass can be a bless or a curse, just as a strong moral compass can be a blessing and an opportunity. I choose opportunity. I choose the opportunity to grow, to be human, to make mistakes, and to accept change.

Flying Away and Leaving the Nest

Fly away, little bird. It’s now time for you to be on your own and grow. Today is the day to leave behind all of the guilt, shame, and fear. Why? Because the future is here. Today is the day to be you. It is time to shine your true colors and step into your bright light. I know it may feel like you are surrounded by gray clouds and gloomy days, but it is time to let the sunshine inside of you.
Let in all of the flowery goodness and positivity. Let the good vibes consume you and know that it is okay to embrace love and laughter. It is not selfish nor is it boasting; it is what you deserve.
You may feel safe under your parent/guardian/support system/soulmate’s wing, but I promise when you let go and fly you will always have a place to call home. You will have a place to go back to and a place to recharge, but you don’t need to let that be your only way anymore.
I usually write for me, but today I am writing to you. This post is for the young adults out there wanting to make a difference but are paralyzed by the fear of never being good enough. I am here to tell you that you are indeed good enough and what you want to do during this time you have on Earth matters. It actually, truly matters.
Use your voice. Fly high and don’t stop. Do your best every damn day and do it because you want to, not because you have to. Set personal goals for yourself, not to make others happy or approve of you. Validate yourself rather than seeking the sole validation of others. Remember how powerful your thoughts are, and know that thoughts are not facts.
Speak your truth, stand up for yourself, and make a difference. Shine that beautiful bright light. Be the change you wish to see in the world. Strike a pose in the mirror on the daily. Forget about turning back because you were made perfectly perfect in your own amazing way. Feel all of the feelings and embrace your emotions.
Know that you are not alone and that so many of your brothers and sisters surrounding you support you with endless amounts of love. Start conversations with strangers and don’t forget to breathe. Know that we are all more alike than different. You are awesome, and you are worthy, and you are amazing. So go and do whatever your heart and soul are calling you to do and make peace with that. Fly away, little one, it is your time to shine.

Fear of the New Year

Today, classes resumed and it was freezing. I decided that I needed some chai tea and naturally ended up at my favorite coffee shop. I usually pay with a debit card but today I decided to pay with cash.

This coffee shop always has two tip jars out. Your tip is used to cast your vote for whichever jar you prefer. Questions in the past have been coffee or tea, batman or superman, or which emoji is your favorite.

But today, the question struck a cord with me. The question was are you excited for 2017 or are you afraid of 2017. The word afraid stuck out to me; so much so that I took a retrospective look at the rest of my day.

Questions raced through my head for the next couple of hours. What do I want for 2017? Do I want to stay where I am? Do I want to let fear of elevating consume me? Or do I want to get excited about the new year? I finally realized I have a clear choice in front of me.

I know what jar I chose for 2017, do you?

Your vibe is contagious.

Missing this beautiful place

I try not to be an advice giver but sometimes it just happens. I like to help others, and while I am usually quite the listener, sometimes I just start giving out advice. Sometimes, it’s wanted and well received, and other times, not so much.

Today, I am here to give you some advice. It’s your decision if you take it or leave it. What you put out in the world is what you will get back. Some call it karma, I call it life.

I honestly believe that we get what we put out in the world. I believe that whatever energy or vibe or whatever you decide to call it is what you get back. When I lived a life full of isolation and negativity, that’s what I received. Now, this is not saying that people were being outright negative and left me in the dark. It’s saying that love and appreciation surrounded me, but I was not ready to see it because of the guards I put up and the energy I surrounded myself in.

Surround yourself with the vibe you want to get back. It’s your conscious choice. Positivity and happiness are downright contagious. You can have it if you want it enough. It may take a lot of work, but it’s worth it. Eventually, it becomes second nature. Just because everyone around you consumes negativity, doubt, and pessimism doesn’t mean you have to follow that path.

Choose love. Choose laughter. Choose life. Choose happiness. Want rainbows and butterflies and happy songs and chocolate. Be around those that bring out the best in you and encourage you to be your best self.

And as for the rest, let it fizzle out. It isn’t necessary to shut down and cancel the negativity or friendships or “bad stuff.” Simply lead the way with the vibe you wish to have and the rest will settle to how it’s meant to be.

Okay, my advice giving is over now. Enjoy the rest of your day and don’t forget to smile!

Love and light,

Del 🙂

Happy Rebirthday

Speak up. Be authentic. Smile. Smile a lot. Use your voice. Be true to you.

I am declaring today my first rebirthday. Today also happens to be World Mental Health Day, how ironic. So, what exactly is a rebirthday? In my mind, I think of my rebirthday as the day where I woke up and started living again, so basically waking up and starting new.

I battled with bipolar disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and major depressive disorder from my senior year of high school up until what would have been the end of my freshman year of college. For me, this felt like a century. Days seemed like months, and months felt like years. I was miserable.

My transformation/rebirth/new life/whateveryouwanttocallit didn’t happen overnight. I will probably say this in all of my blog posts, but it’s true, it took a lot of time. It took awhile to stabilize after getting off my meds. It took some time to start feeling like myself again after feeling like a walking zombie.

During the summer of 2015, I started getting back into the swing of things, but I still struggled. I was still lost and confused. I didn’t know my purpose or have passions. The major difference was that I was willing, I was starting to wake up.

One year ago, in October of 2015, I got my mojo back. I started laughing, smiling, and dancing. I was excited, and my eyes lit up when I talked about my passions. After going to a retreat in Arizona, I met my life coach and started a transformation class with her. I was so freaking optimistic, and it was fabulous. This opportunity gave me so much positivity. I was unstoppable. I was ready to change my life for the better, and I did just that (and more)!

I honestly feel like one year ago I woke up from the darkest place you could ever imagine and got to start anew with life. I truly feel like I was given a second chance and that is why I declare October my rebirth month.

I have transformed in a million ways since last October. Waking up and transforming is such a beautiful thing. I love every part of my journey, and I am so happy to be where I am today.

I look back on my past and am proud of that I endured. What I went through showed me strength and authentic bravery. I am not remorseful or angry. I don’t feel like I missed out or wish I could get time back. I know it has all served a great purpose.

It takes time to find yourself and find your voice, and there is nothing wrong with that. I encourage you today to make a list of gratitude and stick it under your pillow. If you can’t think of anything, write down what you wish for, give it some good vibes, and tuck it away for the day.

I will leave you with my favorite quote to wrap up World Mental Health Day. “There is no path to happiness; happiness is the path.”
